Heroic 15mm MILLENNIUM -- 1000AD to 1150AD
|
The Seljuks may have seemed to have arrived from the East like a thunderbolt, inflicting a mortal (but not fatal) wound on the Byzantine Empire, but these Turks had previously served the waning Samanids in the east, then overthrew the Ghaznavids. Moving East, they conquered Baghdad, defeated the Byzantines in Asia Minor, then conquered the Jazira and the Levant. Their culture and army was very strongly influenced by the Persian Samanids of Khurasan, and included elite Ghilmen, but the core of their manpower was made up of turcoman horse archers. The range includes many variations of these. Some historians conjecture that the grenadier-like sharbush cap may have been worn only by chieftains and other headmen, some Turcomans would have adopted Persian or other hats as they moved from region to region, or in the west they may have worn turbans or other hats typically worn by the Seljuks themselves (the Seljuks seem to have resisted wearing a turban until they moved to the West). Finally, we have more "basal" eastern turcomans dressed like Gok Turks, as well as or "generic" Turcomans," and the generics in particular may be suitable for the Turkopouli that were involved in the First Crusade as allies. We may make Turcomans in fez caps eventually. We decided to make the Seljuk infantry as Kurds, as they seem to be the type most likely to have served on foot in all of the best known campaigns in both East and West. The Agulani are quite mysterious, derived from only one reference, but that reference is quite compelling! Fully armourred, horse and man, fighting with swords. We have depicted them as such, but we also offer them with mixed armoured horses if you want to use them as heroes or leaders in heavy cavalry units or as subgenerals, and on unarmoured horses as Kurds, who are described as wearing heavier armour than Arabs and also as fighting mainly with swords. Seljuk Askars were a sort of medium cavalry, lesser ghllmen, lesser nobles and mercenaries. All the figurines depicted shooting forward are break-waist models. |
